Sweetbox Treats at the Philly Chili Bowl!

At Philly Chili Bowl 5 expect tons of delicious chili – topped off with gourmet cheeses and lots of classic beer to guzzle it all down. Although this is easily a typical BigBite Philly feast, there is still something missing in this equation.

So, what else do we need to complete our food festivities? Dessert of course!

Philly – home to many dessert slingers and pastry players – has a wealth of fantastic sugary sweetness bubblegum-drop swirly-twirly goodness in almost every hood and we are lucky to have one of the best contenders in this area, with us this Sunday!

Gretchen Fantini

Gretchen Fantini – Sweetbox Shop

We welcome the beautiful Gretchen Fantini of Sweetbox Shop, a cupcake connoisseur who will be providing her very delectable chili-inspired cupcakes!

Gretchen and her food truck and dessert shop empire has been running the sugary streets since 2011 while providing delicious gourmet cupcakes like Strawberries & Champagne, Snickerdoodle, Bacon Maple Pancake and Cookies & Cream. Recently she wowed  the crowd with a Prosciutto di Parma Cupcake (yum!).

Gretchen is no stranger to competition, having won the 1st Philly Vendy Awards at the Piazza and  Peach Perfection, a BigBite Philly cupcake competition at the PMFA Brewerytown Roundup event.

Amongst the sea of chili this Sunday, take a moment to check in with Gretchen and end your gluttony with a Sweetbox cupcake!

DJ Low Budget Will Help You Dance All That Chili Off!!

DJ Low Budget, or Low Beezy, is a music aficionado and it shows in his music selection and style. He studies, he reads and he rocks crowds like no other. We are excited and honored to have the legendary Dj Low Budget provide the soundtrack for Philly Chili Bowl 5! So Hype!!

As much fun as my friends and  I used to have at White T’s White Belts, Jump N Funk  or any house party where DJ Phsh was spinning, my most dear and most memorable Philly party moments come from the epic Thursday night parties at the 700 club with Low Budget on the wheels. Simply amazing. If you are between 29-35, you know what I’m talking about.

What is even more exciting about Low Budget joining us on Sunday is that  this year’s competition will be held at the very place where Low Budget and his then partner Diplo started Hollertronix, one of he most notorious shakedowns ever in the city of Philadelphia. This Sunday at the 5th Annual Philly Chili Bowl you definitely will enjoy good music (thank you Low Beezy), good food, good people…a good way to welcome the spring!

PS: if you need a Workout before the Philly Chili Bowl head to Silk City Diner this Friday night to see him in action with fellow turntable titan Bo Bliz!!

Afroooooo! To host Philly Chili Bowl 5!

Philly Chili Bowl’s hostess with the mostess

If you were to look for AfroDJiak, in the party, you would probably find her rocking out in the DJ booth, bobbing her head, probably scratching, and making her hands do that wiki, wiki, wiki thing deejays do.  However, at our 5th Annual Philly Chili Bowl, the wiki, wiki transforms to chili, chili when the deejay/radio personality emerges from behind the booth to host, provide spicy commentary, and present our coveted, one-of-a-kind trophy to the winner(s.)

Raised in the DC Metro area and calling our city home, AfroDJiak has been a constant fixture in the Philly nightlife scene for several years.  Her creative standout mixes such as last month’s Fock Luve V.2, have propelled her to being one of the most sought after turntablists, spinning numerous high profile film and music festivals like, The Root’s Picnic, and Wawa’s Welcome America 4th of July celebration.  Her exceptional mixing skills, extensive knowledge of music, engineering, stage, and music production have also allowed her to spin opening sets for artists such as Black Thought, The Cool Kids, The Money Makin’ Jam Boys, Freeway, and Wale to name a few.  But we don’t need to  name drop to tell you she’s good, just come out March 23rd and see for yourself!

Philly Chili Bowl 2014 Judges

The quality of food and people are equally integral components at BigBite events. That said, it has always been important to find great judges – people who know a great deal about food – but who are also just great people, period. We are truly thankful for this year’s crop of judges as they are all that and more. Get to know them!

Lily Fischer, Pastry Chef/Founder of A Cupcake Wonderland, and Cake Life Bake Shop

Aside from being a Philly native who is truly a bright ray of sunshine, Lily is a classic example of Philadelphia culinary ingenuity. The former preschool teacher (and Wing King 3 Champ) discovered she had a knack for baking out of this world cupcakes, and other sweets, just six years ago. Eager to develop these talents she graduated from the Art Institute of Philadelphia’s Baking and Pastry program and founded A Cupcake Wonderland in 2009. Having won the “Cupcake Wars” (check out the audition video – dope) and been featured on the reality show three times, Lily has thrived through the recent explosion of the Philly cupcake industry and has grown much larger than just cupcakes.  Now partnered with her best friend from Sarah Lawrence College, Nema Etemadi, the Philly queen of confections is poised to present Cake Life Bake Shop, a new venture! We can’t wait and we are very excited, and honored to have her weighing in on this years competition!!!

Christopher Kearse, Chef/Owner, Will BYOB

A Levitown native, Christopher Kearse found a love for food by watching the Food Network.  Combining that passion with an exceptional amount of creativity and determination, he has become one of the city’s rising stars, opened Will BYOB his Modern French BYOB, and continues to blow minds with the sheer artistry of his food preparation.Though this will be his first judging post at BigBite’s Philly Chili Bowl, we’ve been blessed with Kearse’s great energy at other events and are very pumped to see what he thinks of this year’s fierce competition. If you are not familiar with Chris, get to the state store before 9 and see his handiwork for yourself at Will  BYOB pronto! Welcome to the team Chris!

Drew Lazor, Food & Drink writer

After five years of judging both the Philly Chili Bowl and Wing King, Drew is one of our most beloved judges! This seasoned vet has one of the most respected palettes in the city and is even more widely known for writing great articles about the myriad of notable food and drink attractions in the Philly area. If  there is a place that offers good food or fancy cocktails, he has been there – and probably wrote about it. Follow him, introduce yourself, do what you have to do he will not steer you wrong! Welcome back Drew!

Candice Birdsong, Chef/Food Blogger and founder Co-Founder of Addiction Boutique

We are sooooo stoked to welcome this new judge to the BigBite circuit!

You may remember her from this summer’s airing of “Cupcake Wars“, representing Philly with team Cookie Confidential…or perhaps you snatched one of her many delicious recipes off of her blog Pretty Girls Can Cook hmmm… or maybe she gave you a makeup or fashion consultations at the Addiction Boutique in Center City? If you managed to miss this local authority on good food and high fashion, Philly Chili Bowl 5 is your chance to get familiar. Please give a hearty BigBite welcome to Mount Airy’s own Candice Birdsong!!

BigBite is clearly  focused on food, but also how food relates to other aspects our culture. That said, it is awesome to have judges with so many talents. Come see how Candice rates this years crop of contestants!!

Philly Chili Bowl 2014: The Ukie Club

As usual, we at BigBite Philly like to have events in spaces that are characteristic of the vibrant, fun loving, culture seeking Philadelphia foodies that our events attract. This in mind, Philly Chili Bowl 2014 will be held at the Ukranian American Citizen’s Organization aka the Ukie Club, aka the place that incubated Diplo’s and Philly Chili Bowl DJ Low Budget’s (!!) Hollertronix party and catapulted them to superstardom, aka where M.I.A. performed numerous times aka where turntable titans Emynd and Bo Bliz rocked the house with Peedie Crakk aka an extremely friendly, warm space to eat dance and fellowship with awesome people!!

The Ukie has a lot of history and is sure to spark nostalgia for veterans of the Philly party scene. It is also centrally located at 847 N. Franklin Street with plenty of street and lot parking. It really is a cozy, homegrown establishment that gives us a little more space to eat and move our feet!!! We can’t wait to see you there March 23rd!!!
